Lafayette Competes at Armory Saturday Night Races

New York, N.Y. - The Lafayette track and field team participated in the Armory Saturday Night Races against competition from 20 collegiate teams. Several Lafayette competitors earned second place finishes in the event while the women's team finished fifth and the men's team combined to finish seventh.

Senior Joelle Neilson highlighted Lafayette's effort at the Armory with a career performance. Neilson broke the Indoor school record in the Long Jump with her jump of 18' 11 1/4", surpassing Jessica Buzzell's '08 previous mark of 18' 9 3/4". Neilson also set the Lafayette record in the Triple Jump with her leap of 39' 1 1/4". Each event earned her a pair of second place finishes and also qualified her for the ECAC Championships.

On the men's side, Jerome Rudolph's leap of 23' 2 3/4" qualified him for the IC4A Championships and vaulted him into fifth all-time at Lafayette. His jump ranked second in the event, behind Corey Crawford of Rutgers.

Among the other second place finishers was junior Chris Parker in the 800m Run with a time of 1:56.76. Sophomore Rachel Pena took second in the 20lb Weight Throw with a toss of 54' 3 3/4".

Sarah Welsh-Huggins crossed the line in fourth place in the Women's 1000m Run with a personal-best time of 3:00.58. Her time ranks seventh all-time in school history. The senior was also part of the women's 4 x 800m Relay team that clocked in 9:50.55, good for fourth overall. Joining Welsh-Huggins was freshman Grace Watters, Senior Erin Mee and Freshman Jennifer Schroeder.

Freshman Brittany Powell Long Jump of 17' 8" ranks eighth all-time in school history and was fifth in the event.

Senior sprinter Nick DeRosa also had an exceptional night, running 49.47 in the 400m Dash to finish eighth overall. His effort places him second in the Patriot League and fourth on the Lafayette all-time list.

Lafayette's next event is scheduled for Jan. 20, when it travels back to New York, N.Y. to participate in the Great Dane Classic.
