Annapolis, Md. - An 88th minute goal by Navy, after Lafayette's equalizer two minutes prior, gave the Mids a 3-2 victory on Friday night at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
Lafayette leveled the score at two apiece at the 85:05 mark thanks to an own goal by Navy, but the home side quickly answered and put the game-winning tally past two-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Lauren Smedley. Navy's Brittany Fruin fired a shot off the crossbar moments before Julie Schumacher put the ball back into the mix. Smedley got a hand on the ball, but couldn't corral it before Lily Kraemer put it in back of the net for the decisive goal.
Navy improved to 14-1-0 overall in 2012, including a 2-0-0 record in Patriot League play. Lafayette drops to 4-7-2 and 1-1-0 in the conference.
"We were excellent tonight," head coach Mick Statham said. "We were very resilient and competitive and I am so proud of their efforts. Navy are a very good team and I think it was a great advertisement for Patriot League soccer. We must get over our obvious disappointment and be ready for Sunday."
The Mids led for a majority of the night after Morgan Dankanich beat Smedley 14 minutes into the match. Smedley totaled seven saves, including three before halftime, and Navy went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
Lafayette's leading goal scorer Jill Dozier scored for the second time in two League games to even the contest at 1-1 in the 57th minute. The tally, assisted by Avery Jackson, was her seventh of the year.
The tie score lasted less than six minutes as Navy responded to take a 2-1 lead. Ashlynn Soellner sent in a cross for Kaylie Davidson and the striker put a shot past Smedley for her fifth of the season.
Navy goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner made five saves and improved to 12-1 this year. The Mids outshot Lafayette (22-7) and had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Lafayette continues Patriot League play on Sunday when it travels to Washington, D.C. to play American. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
