WASHINGTON, D.C. - American scored eight minutes into the match, again in the 65th minute and added a late insurance goal as it cruised to a 3-0 victory over Lafayette on Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field.

Erin Mulher set up the Eagles' first tally with a through ball that found Michelle Montillo's feet. Montillo took the ball from the left side and put a shot past Lafayette keeper Lauren Smedley for what turned out to be the game winner.

With the win, American improves to 4-8-2 overall, including a 2-1-0 record in conference matches. Lafayette drops to 4-8-2 and 1-2-0 in the Patriot League.

"It was not our day today in many ways," head coach Mick Stathamsaid. I should mention Catherine Galgano, as I thought she was superb. American deserved to win and we can't complain much about the final score. Now we will get some rest and move on to Holy Cross."

American added its second goal of the day when Sam Trotta sent a cross into the Leopards' penalty area and connected with Michaela Cowgill through the air. Cowgill's header put the home side up 2-0 before a third American score at 85:30.

The nail in the coffin for Lafayette came off Carleigh Morba's shot that Smedley got a hand on, but the rebound bounced to Kristin Piorun for the third marker.

Smedley finished with four saves in the loss and American's Charlene Belanger made two stops. Senior's Jill Dozier and Allison Stone each put one shot on target for Lafayette as the Leopards were outshot 18-5 in the match. American also held the edge in corner kicks, 8-2.

Patriot League play continues on the road on Oct. 13 for Lafayette when it plays Holy Cross at 5 p.m.
