EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette College hosted 211 of the nation's top fencers on Saturday at Kirby Sports Center for the 2012 NCAA Fencing Mid-Atlantic/South Regional. The Leopards sent nine student-athletes to the strip for the 13-team event.

Men's épée was Lafayette's strongest school of the event with four student-athletes qualifying for the regional. Daniel Robitzski posted a 3-3 record - the same mark as four fencers who advanced to the second round - but missed the cut by a single indicator. Andre Rafizadeh and Noah Weiner each won two bouts in the preliminary round, and Everett Glenn tallied one victory. The Leopards' lone female competitor was épéeist Allison Reich.

Phillip Manna, Zachary Roberts and Jeremy Martin-Mills each competed in foil, with Manna and Roberts each recording a win. Eric Luby also won one bout as Lafayette's only sabreur at the regional.

In addition to Lafayette's participants, four top-10 men's squads (No. 2 Penn State, No. 4 Princeton, No. 7 Penn and No. 8 Duke) and three top-10 women's squads (No. 2 Penn State, No. 3 Princeton and No. 10 Penn) had representatives at the event. Today's results are a crucial part of the seeding for the NCAA Championships, which will be held on March 22-25 at the Ohio State University.

Lafayette's nine fencers at the event topped last year's mark of eight qualifiers. The Leopards finished their head-to-head season with a 20-12 record - the club's best winning percentage (.625) since the 1992-93 season (11-5, .688). The team took home a third-place finish in men's épée at the MACFA Championships, and head coach Tom Gauntner was named MACFA Coach of the Year for the second time in his five-year career.

While the Leopards have participated in several NCAA championships in recent years, the College last hosted an NCAA event when two rounds of the 1995 NCAA Men's Soccer College Cup were held at Oaks Stadium. This was the first NCAA fencing regional held at Lafayette.
