KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Rain wreaked havoc with the Lafayette softball fortunes on Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games. Bryant dealt Lafayette a 3-2 setback as the Leopards were rallying in the bottom of the sixth before the game was called due to rain. Mother Nature wiped out the second game of the day, scheduled vs. Utah Valley at 11 a.m.
Bryant broke through for a run in the top of the third inning. No. 9 hitter Lindsay Martin reached on an error and later scored when Aubrey Mable doubled to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, the Leopards' Kristen Berger and Gwen Turner each cranked two-out singles before being stranded and ending the inning.
The Bulldogs (1-5) added two more in the top of the fifth. Mable's second double of the game plated Byrant's second run and she later scored on an error to run the lead to 3-0.
Lafayette threatened in the bottom of the fifth frame, again with two outs in the inning. Berger and Turner were at it again, but the inning ended on a batter's interference call.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lafayette loaded the bases with three straight singles by Stacey Dorn, Lauren Murphy and Carly Feiro. A sac fly brought in Lafayette's first run, and a second run came plateward on a throwing error following a rundown. Lafayette trailed 3-2 with Feiro at second base and one out when the skies opened up. The game was delayed by rain and eventually called when the weather did not subside.
Bryant's Brittany Hart (1-1) earned the win, allowing four hits in five innings while striking out one. Sophomore Melissa Robinson (0-3) took the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Only one of Robinson's runs was earned as the Lafayette defense committed three errors.
Lafayette (0-3) added a makeup game vs. Manhattan on Monday at 5 p.m. and will play its two regularly scheduled affairs on Tuesday: Wagner at 1 p.m. and Howard at 3 p.m. Lafayette plays 12 games in eight days.
