PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Drexel banged out nine runs on seven hits and was aided by four Lafayette errors en route to a 9-4 win on Thursday in rare single-game softball action.
The Dragons (14-15) scored four in the first off Lafayette starter Melissa Robinson and two of them were unearned because of a pair of Leopard errors in the inning. Paige Collings and Maddison Timoteo singled home scores.
The Leopards did not remain scoreless for long, pushing across a two-spot in the third inning after stranding a pair of runners in the top of the second. Stacey Dorn smashed a two-run home run to left with Jordan Parsons aboard. The Leopards cut their deficit to 4-2.
Drexel took control of the game with three runs in the fourth inning to stretch its lead to 7-2. Devon Metcalf was responsible for driving in two with her single to right field while Collings plated the other.
In the top of the fifth, the Lafayette offense answered with two scores. Dorn drove in her third run of the game, scoring Gwen Turner (2-for-3) who had led off the inning with a single. Parsons (2-for-2) doubled and scored on Carly Feiro's fielder's choice as Lafayette lagged behind 7-4 in the 9-4 final.
Robinson (4-10) took the loss, throwing six innings while giving up nine runs (six earned) with three strikeouts and a walk. Shelby Taylor (7-7) garnered the win, allowing four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Lafayette (5-18) returns to action on Saturday at Holy Cross in the first two games of a four-game conference series.
