FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Lafayette women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Sacred Heart on Friday night at Campus Field. Sophomore Jaclyn Giordano scored the Leopards' lone goal in the loss.

"I thought we lacked a little bit of discipline in our play tonight," head coach Mick Statham said. "It was a difficult surface to play on, and I thought we showed good character in the last 15-20 minutes after we went down 2-0. We got stronger as the game went on, but it just wasn't enough in the end."

The game remained scoreless until late in the first half when Sacred Heart cracked the Lafayette defense for the first time this season. The Pioneers' Jennifer Mulvey put Sacred Heart ahead when she lifted a shot over Lauren Smedley's head. Smedley's shutout streak came to an end at 239:33.

Sacred Heart took the 1-0 advantage into halftime, and also swapped keepers, bringing in Talia Schwartz for Sudney Judkins.

Less than five minutes into the second half Sacred Heart doubled its advantage, when Ashley Moore pounced on a loose ball inside the Leopards' penalty area and poked it past Smedley through a host of players. The goal, which came at 49:14 officially, proved to be the game winner.

Lafayette's goal from Giordano came in the 85^th minute, after the Maroon and White capitalized on a Sacred Heart giveaway. The turnover led to a breakaway opportunity for Giordano, who netted her first goal of 2012.

Shots (10) and corner kicks (2) were even in the match, but Smedley made six saves, compard to Schwartz's four in the second half. Giordano, Jill Dozier, Laura Zito and Alyssa Finelli each were credited with two shots in the game.

Lafayette returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it hosts St. Peter's in its home opener.
