Covert Classic Results
EASTON, Pa. -Members of the Lafayette Track & Field team traveled to two different meets this weekend. Some student-athletes competed at the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York City, while others traveled down the road to partake in Lehigh University's Covert Classic.
In New York, senior Will Volkmann broke the school record in the Indoor 5,000m race. His time of 14:40.15 was good for sixth place, as well as an IC4A qualifying spot. Volkmann broke David Robinson's(Class of 1998) by two seconds.
The women's 4x400m relay team won the Pennsylvania heat at the Armory. The team, consisting of freshmen Erin Keen and Devin Smith along with seniors Chelsea Marone and Megan Matusky, ran the sixth fastest time in school history. Their time of 3:54.19 is also the best this season.
At the Covert Classic, juniors Elise Buffinton and Rachel Penacontinued their successful indoor seasons. Buffinton won the pole vault with a jump of 12'5 ½", which ties her own school record that was set last week.
Pena won the 20lb weight throw with a heave of 57' 5". Teammate Gwen Steckeltook second in the event with a throw of 52' 8". Pena also placed third in the shot put with a toss of 42' 4 ¼".
Freshman Sarah Talmadgethrew a personal best in the shot put, and placed fifth with a throw of 41' 9 ¼".
On the men's side, freshman Colton Mitchellplaced fifth in the pole vault after jumping a personal best of 14' 1 ¼".
Lafayette teammates finished fifth and sixth in the 35lb weight throw. Junior Mac Maguire and sophomore Juannell Rileythrew 49' ¾" and 48' 7 ¼", respectively. Both throws were personal bests.
Freshman Jordan Rosesalso had a strong showing, and finished fifth in the 200m with a time of 23.62.
The team returns to the NYC Armory for their next event on Fri. Feb. 8. The Lafayette/Rider Invitational is slated to start at 4 p.m.
