DOVER, Del. - Timely extra-base hits from Jordan Parsons and Victoria Vergona and a solid pitching performance from Melissa Robinson propelled Lafayette to a 2-1 win over Delaware State on Saturday night at the Sean Savage Epilepsy Awareness Tournament.
Parsons' extra-base connection came in the third inning with Kristen Berger aboard at third. Berger had reached on a walk, stole second and had Brittany Paul sacrifice her to third for the first out of the inning. Lafayette led the hosts 1-0.
The Leopards padded the lead in the sixth. Allison Brown led off the inning with a single. Head coach Meaghan Asselta pinch ran for Brown with Kelly Lallis. Robinson sacrificed Lallis to second and a fly ball to centerfield moved Lallis 60 feet closer to home. Victoria Vergona finished off the rally, ripping a triple to the gap in left center to score Lallis and hand Lafayette a 2-0 advantage.
The Hornets finally scored in home half of the inning. The Leopards aided the hosts' cause putting a runner aboard on a throwing error before a one-out Rochelle Sablay double cut the Lafayette advantage in half.
In the bottom of the seventh, Robinson fought through the final of three Leopard errors on the day to keep the 2-1 margin intact and snap the Leopards' five-game losing streak. Robinson (3-6) scattered three hits and did not give up an earned run while striking out two.
Lafayette closes out the weekend vs. Brown on Sunday at 12:30 p.m., the third meeting between the two teams this season.
