Lafayette Throwers Continue Top Finishes

MEN'S RESULTS WOMEN'S RESULTS

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Members of the Lafayette Track & Field team competed at the Coach P Invitational at Moravian College on Saturday.

The women throwers continued to string together top finishes in the field events. Rachel Pena set two meet records on the afternoon. Her distance of 178' 10" in the hammer throw was good for first place, and beat the previous meet record by more than 20 feet. Her second place heave of 43' 1" in the shot put topped that record by two feet.

Gwen Steckel notched a second place finish in the hammer throw (149' 6") and a first place finish in the discus (132' 10"). Freshman Sarah Talmadge also had a strong showing in the hammer throw, finishing seventh with a distance of 126' 8". Talmadge finished third in the shot put with a throw of 40' 8.25".

Junior Elise Buffinton set a meet record of her own, and grabbed second place in the pole vault with her height of 11' 11.75".

In the track events, Lafayette had four sprinters with top-8 finishes. Devin Smith (1st place, 56.65), Haley Langton (3rd place, 58.30), and Megan Matusky (8th place, 59.65) all in the 400m dash.

Chelsea Marone competed in the 400m hurdles with a third place finish and time of 1:05.45.

The men had three top-5 finishes in the 400m hurdles. Tim Shaw (2nd place, 54.7), Neil Franzese (3rd place, 54.8), and Ryan McVeigh (4th place, 55.83) all topped the Leopards in the event. Bill Leonard finished seventh in the same event with a time of 56.54.

Rounding out the top finishers in the track events were Nick Hepp with a fourth place finish in the 400m dash (49.13), and Chris Parker with a second place effort in the 800m (1:55.98).

In the field events, Colton Mitchell's jump of 14' 5.25" was good for third in the pole vault, while Chris Luna's throw of 172' 8" put him in fourth in the javelin.

Additionally on Thursday and Friday, sophomore Chris Castello competed in the Decathlon at the Mondschein Multis at Kutztown University. Castello finished 4th overall with a personal best of 5,873 Pts. His best event was the 400m Dash at the end of the first day as he ran 49.75. Chris also had personal bests in the 100m, Discus, Javelin, and Pole Vault.

Next weekend, members of the Lafayette Track & Field team will travel to both the Larry Ellis and Greyhound Invitationals. The Larry Ellis Invitational will take place in Princeton, N.J. on April 19 starting at 4 p.m., and the Greyhound Invitational is scheduled for April 20 in Bethlehem, Pa.
