Track & Field Competes at Penn Relays and Lehigh Games

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -Members of the Lafayette Track and Field team competed in the annual Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. on Thursday and Friday, as well as the Lehigh Games in Bethlehem on Saturday.

Rachel Pena, coming off a first place finish at last week's Coach P Invitational, added another top finish at Penn. The junior finished fifth in the championship round of the hammer throw with a personal best throw of 188' 9". Pena also notched a 21st place finish in the shot put in the Eastern Division with a heave of 41' 6.5".

Fellow thrower Gwen Steckel threw a season best 146' 7" in the discus, good for 14th place. Steckel also threw 160' 5" in the hammer throw and finished 18th in the college round.

Elise Buffinton broke her own school record on the way to a fifth place finish in the pole vault. The junior jumped 12' 5.5", breaking her previous record by two inches.

Rounding out day one's events was the women's 4x400 relay team. The team of Haley Langton, Megan Matusky, Chelsea Marone, and Devin Smith ran 3:52.66 and finished fifth in their heat.

Day two of the Penn Relays featured the men's 4x400 relay team grabbing a second place finish in the Wetzler/Pennsylvania section. The team of Nick Hepp, Ryan McVeigh, Jarrel Bobb, and Bill Leonard ran 3:14.65. The time was the third fastest outdoor time in Lafayette history.

Members of the team also competed in the Lehigh Games in Bethlehem, Pa. on Saturday afternoon.

Teammates took both top spots in the men's hammer throw event. Sophomore Juannell Riley grabbed the top spot with an IC4A-qualifying throw of 175' 4", and junior Mac Maguire finished right behind him with an IC4A-qualifying distance of 174' 7".

Lafayette freshmen also posted top finishes. Chris Castello placed second in the long jump with a distance of 20' 2.5". Classmate Colton Mitchell tied for first in the men's pole vault at a height of 14' 6".

Next up for the Leopards will be the Patriot League Championships on May 3. Events are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. at Lehigh University.
