LEXINGTON, Va. - Garrett Reed threw a no-hitter to lead VMI to a 3-0 victory over Lafayette in the Leopards' season-opener on Friday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium. Reed struck out 13 Lafayette batters, while walking just one in the series-opening shutout win.

VMI (2-2) jumped out to an early lead with a run in its first trip to the plate. Leadoff man Jordan Tarsovich laced a singled into centerfield and scored two batters later, following two wild pitches, on Red Dowdell's grounder to shortstop.

Reed cruised through the first four innings and faced the minimum before VMI added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth frame. Lafayette starter Connor Ortolf got the first two outs before a walk and an infield single brought Tarsovich to the plate. The Keydets' second baseman delivered a two-run double down the right field line to push the lead to 3-0.

Lafayette got its lone baserunner on when Campbell Lipe walked with one gone in the fifth, but Reed struck out the next two hitters to strand him at first base. Ortolf retired the side in order in the bottom half of the inning and completed his effort with a scoreless sixth inning. The senior left-hander tossed six innings and gave up three runs on six hits, struck out three and walked a pair in the loss.

Reed finished the game by striking out the side in the ninth and sophomore southpaw Ari Kaufman pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Lafayette. Kaufman hit a batter, but did not allow a hit over his two frames.

The series resumes on Saturday afternoon when the Leopards and Keydets face off at 3 p.m. Leopards' right-handed pitcher Alex Farina is expected to take the ball against VMI lefty Connor Bach.
