LEXINGTON, Va. - The Lafayette baseball team dropped game three of its season opening series with VMI by a final of 3-1. Andrew Landolfi went 2-3 at the dish, while Tim Lazor knocked in the only Leopards' lone run.

Toby Schwartz took the ball for the Maroon and White and was saddled with the loss after surrendering two runs on three hits in four innings of work. He fanned five batters while giving up two walks. The Keydets' Andrew Woods earned the win as he gave up two hits, one walk, and fanned eight in six innings.

The Keydets (4-2) struck early, scoring on a throwing error by Schwartz. They would add another run in the second with a two-out double by Gary LeClair, scoring Cameron Walter, who reached on an infield single.

After Schwartz's four innings, the Leopards (0-3) turned to Cory Spera for two hitless innings, but the offense remained silent in the top of the seventh against VMI reliever Berkley Hawkins. He retired the side in order with one punchout.

The 2-0 score would stand until the bottom of the seventh inning, when VMI's Jordan Tarsovich knocked in LeClair following his single. LeClair moved into scoring position on a throwing error prior to crossing the plate.

Facing a 3-0 deficit heading into the ninth after Ari Kaufman tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless ball, Andrew Santomauro reached base after working the count with one out in the top of the ninth. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Parker Hills walked to put two men on with one away. Santomauro moved to third when Hills was picked off at first base and scored on Lazor's two-out double. VMI's closer Travis Thomas earned the save by getting Alex Woinski to line out to shortstop.

Lafayette travels to Philadelphia to take on La Salle on Tuesday. First pitched is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
