EASTON, Pa. – Jamie O'Hare’s lay-in with 23 seconds left completed Lafayette’s 25-point comeback in a 58-56 win on Wednesday night. The Leopards outscored Colgate 39-14 in the second half to rally for the victory.
O’Hare paced Lafayette (11-9, 4-5 PL) with 18 points and three assists, while senior Emily Homan collected her third consecutive double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and also blocked five shots. Anna Ptasinski knocked down three triples to finish with 11 points.
Colgate (3-17, 2-7 PL) shot 52 percent from the field in the first half, but were held to just 25 percent in the second half. The Raders were led by Josie Stockill with 14 points.
Lafayette and Colgate exchanged buckets over the opening five minutes, before the Raiders took an early 13-10 lead with 14:37 to play in the half. Colgate used a 15-3 run midway through the first half to extend its lead to 12 at the under eight media timeout.
Colgate continued to control the game, leading the Leopards 34-17 with five minutes to play in the opening frame. Another seven-point spurt pushed the Colgate advantage to 24, and the Raiders led 42-19 at halftime.
Maddie Peabody opened the scoring in the second half with a three-pointer from the wing. Ptasinski knocked down another triple for the Leopards as Lafayette began to chip away at the Colgate advantage. A third three-pointer from O’Hare to start the half cut the deficit to 16, forcing a Colgate timeout with 15:24 on the clock.
Sammy Stipa buried another Lafayette three and the Leopards moved to within 15. A Stipa jumper, followed by an O’Hare pull-up narrowed the margin to 11, 48-37, with 10 minutes to play. A three-point play from Homan and a triple from Linnel Macklin trimmed the spread to five with 7:42 to play.
O’Hare tossed in a floater at the six minute mark to close the gap to three. Josie Stockill pushed Colgate’s advantage back up to five at the four minute mark, but a pair from the charity stipe from Ashley Lutz, followed by a putback from Homan had the deficit down to one, 54-53, with 2:22 to go.
Stipa found a wide open Ptasinski on the wing and the freshman buried her third three of the night to give Lafayette a two-point lead at the 1:37 mark. A Colgate bucket with 53 seconds tied the game at 56. O’Hare inbounded the ball under the basket off the back of a Raider defender. She collected the ball underneath the bucket and converted the lay-in to complete the come from behind win.
The Leopards open the second round of Patriot League play on Saturday against Navy. Opening tip from Kirby Sports Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Notes:
Homan scored in double figures for the 21st straight game.
Colgate’s 14 second-half points are the fewest the Leopards have given up in a half this season.
