WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Annika Sheehan of the Lafayette women's soccer team slotted home a cross from junior Kaelin King in the 32nd minute for the only score on either side in a 1-0 Leopards victory on Saturday afternoon at Holy Cross.
The win is Lafayette's first in six tries in Patriot League contests, moving the Leopards to 1-4-1 in league play and 7-5-1 overall on the year. Holy Cross drops to 5-7-3 overall and 1-3-2 in conference action.
"Today was a very good team performance. We played some really good soccer at times, which was really pleasing to see," head coach Mick Statham said. "Annika's goal was terrific and obviously the game winner, which made it very important."
The game overall was dominated by the Maroon and White, holding a 25-6 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corners. Working down the left side in the 32nd minute, King found some space and sent a service across the front of goal to Sheehan on the far side. The rookie placed her finish in the upper right corner of the net from about five yards out for the game's lone goal.
Junior Danielle Sedillo and sophomore Kelly O'Brien split the game with Sedillo earning the victory to move to 5-3 on the season. Sedillo posted four saves in her first half of action, while O'Brien was only required to make one save throughout the second half of play.
King was a force throughout the game on the offensive end, posting 11 shots on the afternoon with three on target. Classmate Joanna Scotti also got in on the action, putting two of her five shots on frame.
The Leopards return to the pitch on Wednesday, making the short trip across the Lehigh Valley to battle archrival Lehigh in Bethlehem at 7 p.m.
