BALTIMORE, Md. – The Lafayette men's soccer team played 110 minutes of scoreless action under windy conditions in Baltimore, Md. on Saturday afternoon, earning a double-overtime draw with Loyola to move to 1-0-1 in Patriot League play.
The Leopards came out of the gates strong with six shots, including four on target in the opening 45 minutes. The Maroon and White controlled the majority of the action, not allowing one shot on goal to the Greyhounds in the first half.
Just over 12 minutes into the second half, though, a red card issued to senior
Nate Arronson turned the momentum to the home side. The Leopards turned much more defensive when playing with only 10 men, forcing the game into overtime without a goal.
After the first 10-minute session resulted in very little offense from either side, the second began with what looked like the game-winner as seniors
Todd Forrester and
Eric West worked the ball down the right side through an unsettled Loyola defense.
After shifting through a number of defenders, West flicked the ball to his left to Forrester, who just needed to place it with pace into the back of the net as the keeper had committed to West's run. Instead, he tried to slot it to the right side where a Greyhounds defender had hustled back and cleared it off the goal line to thwart the threat.
The last chance for the Leopards came in the 109th minute when a 25-yard free kick from junior
Ben Marks sailed just over the crossbar and the final buzzer sounded at 0-0.
Shots finished at 12-10 in favor of the home side, while Loyola also held the edge in corners, 6-4. Sophomore goalkeeper
Brad Seeber picked up three saves for his fifth clean sheet of the season and second in as many games.
The Leopards return home on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. matchup with Bucknell.
