POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - A busy Sunday afternoon for Lafayette's men's fencing team concluded with a 21-6 victory over Yeshiva at the Vassar Invitational.
The Leopards were a perfect 9-0 in the epee against the Maccabees, with David Jennings, David Shindell and Conrad Stoerker each going undefeated. Alex Gorloff and Jake Burns added 3-0 marks in the sabre.
Lafayette additionally competed against five other opponents earlier in the afternoon, dropping decisions to Haverford (15-12), West Point (16-11), Vassar (19-8), Stevens (20-7) and Sacred Heart (24-3). The Leopards came closest to registering a second victory against the Fords, winning both the sabre and the epee by 5-4 margins, but a 7-2 setback in the foil proved to be too much to overcome.
Gorloff led the Maroon and White at the invitational, winning 14 of his 18 bouts, with sweeps against Yeshiva, Haverford and Sacred Heart.
Shindell and Jennings also had strong showings on the day. Shindell went 11-7, winning two bouts or more in four contests, and Jennings finished 10-8. In addition to their sweeps over the Maccabees, Shindell went 3-0 versus Haverford, including a convincing triumph over 2014 MACFA Individual Champion Eric Gardner, and Jennings was perfect against West Point.
Andrew Mange took 2 of 3 bouts against Yeshiva, Haverford and Vassar.
"The win/loss statistics don't reflect the power potential we've got," assistant coach Tom Gauntner said. "But the pieces are all there and are starting to fall into place. Jake and Alex provide a one-two punch combination on sabre that no team has really found an answer for. We will be firing on all cylinders by the time conference championships and NCAA regionals come around."
Lafayette (2-6) is right back in action this Saturday, traveling to Haverford for a MACFA Group A Round Robin competition.
