WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Struggles offensively and a strong Monmouth attack in the second half proved the difference on Saturday afternoon in West Long Branch, N.J. as the Lafayette women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to the Hawks by a 10-3 score.

Sophomore Kirsten Wilhelmsen tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Leopards offensively, who scored the first goal of the game, but gave up seven tallies before they scored again. Also recording markers for the Maroon and White were sophomore Maggie Carver and junior Melissa Galione, both coming in the second half.

The Leopards were outshot, 20-14, and beat out in the majority of statistical categories, falling on the wrong side in ground balls (25-21), draw controls (9-6) and turnovers (24-21). Additionally, Lafayette went 0-for-3 on its free-position chances, while Monmouth converted three of its four attempts and cleared on all 15 of their opportunities compared to 11-of-12 for the Leopards.

Wilhelmsen opened the game with an unassisted tally, but seven unanswered markers from six different Monmouth players through the first half and into the second opened the game up, giving the Hawks a 7-1 advantage with 13:52 to play.

Carver ended the run with a finish off a Wilhelmsen feed at the 13:41 mark, but three more off free-position from the sticks of Allison Stathius (twice) and Olivia Higson pushed the edge to eight at 10-2. Galione's unassisted goal at the 6:07 mark was the final tally for either side, moving the score to 10-3 as the final horn sounded.

Next up for the Leopards is their home opener on Tuesday, hosting Delaware at 7 p.m.
