EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team ran into an offensive juggernaut on Tuesday evening in its home opener at Fisher Field as Delaware racked up 22 goals in a 22-2 win over the Leopards.
The Blue Hens ran away with it early, scoring four goals in the first 10 minutes before Lafayette's Ashley Tedesco tallied her first of the year at the 18:04 mark to stop the run. However, Delaware would go on to score 17 straight before another Lafayette tally, this time off the stick of Kirsten Wilhelmsen, her second of the season.
The Hens' Casey Lyons had a breakout night with nine goals and one assist for 10 points, while four other Delaware players tallied multiple goals as McKenzie Rafferty and Shannon Hawley put in three apiece, and Jamie Schwartz and Caitlin McCartney each recorded two markers. Additionally, Schwartz assisted with four helpers to bring her point total to six on the night.
In addition to Wilhelmsen and Tedesco's markers, freshman goalkeeper Anna Raymond did all she could in net in her 50:30 of game action, making 11 saves on 38 shots faced. Classmate Gina Bianchi saw her first collegiate action, making one save and allowing two goals in 9:30 of playing time.
The visitors held the edge in every statistical category, including shots (38-7), ground balls (17-12), draw controls (15-11), clears (13-for-13 compared to 10-for-15 for the Leopards) and turnovers (9-21). Junior captain Laura Rowan caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls as a shining spot in the back, while freshman Kristin Schaen recorded four draw controls for the Maroon and White.
On the other side, Delaware's Caitlin McCartney caused two turnovers, picked up four ground balls and grabbed four draw controls to lead or tie for the team lead in all three categories. Senior goalkeeper Alex Zaugra made two saves in her second win of the season.
The Leopards return to Fisher Field on Sunday, hosting UC Davis at 12 p.m.
