GOOSE CREEK, S.C. - The Lafayette baseball team avenged its season-opening loss to UMBC by claiming a 7-5 decision over the Retrievers on Saturday at the Charleston Baseball Academy's Dennis Park. The Leopards also faced Richmond later in the day, falling by a score of 9-0.
In the first game of the non-traditional doubleheader, Lafayette scored seven runs on just six hits, but also drew nine walks and stole six bases against the UMBC pitching staff.
Junior right-handed starter Mitch Leeds went 6.1 strong innings to earn the victory, striking out four batters while allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. The Retrievers (1-2) jumped on him early, scoring two runs on three hits in the very first inning on RBI singles by Andrew Casali and Hunter Dolshun.
Leeds would settle down after that and did not allow another run until the seventh, with his offense scoring seven times of its own in the meantime.
Lafayette got on the board in the second inning when freshman Steven Cohen hit a three-run home run - the first of his career and the first of the Leopards' season - after Campbell Lipe doubled and Parker Hills walked.
Lafayette scored twice more in the third inning without tallying a hit, taking advantage of two free passes, a stolen base and an error.
The Leopards finished their scoring in the sixth thanks to an RBI single from senior Toby Schwartz and an RBI sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Michael Coniglio.
UMBC used a walk, a passed ball and a pair of singles in the seventh to chase Leeds from the game and make it 7-3. The Retrievers then notched a pair of runs off of senior reliever Cory Spera in the eighth, but junior side-armer Connor McMahon pitched a perfect ninth to lock down the save.
The Leopards (1-2) did not fare as well in the second game of the day, as Richmond starter Zak Sterling recorded 12 strikeouts over eight scoreless innings and allowed just one hit and one walk.
The Spiders (4-3) scored early and often in the game, and were led by Michael Morman's five RBIs. Lafayette starter Trevor Houck took the loss after surrendering six runs (all earned) on six hits over 3.1 innings. Cohen tallied the lone hit for the Leopards when he doubled in the sixth inning to break up Sterling's no-hit bid.
Lafayette and Richmond will play again on Sunday morning, with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m.
