SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Lafayette Leopards lost to host Seton Hall on Wednesday in non-conference baseball action, falling by a score of 8-3 at Owen T. Carroll Field.

The Lafayette pitching staff tied a season high by striking out 10 opposing hitters, but the Pirates also racked up 11 hits on the way to their ninth win of the season against 10 losses. The Leopards' record fell to 2-9 with the defeat.

The Leopards used six different pitchers in the game, with only senior starter Toby Schwartz going a full two innings. Schwartz (0-2) struck out five of the 10 batters he faced, but was tagged with the loss after allowing a run in the first inning, which came on a sacrifice fly by Seton Hall's D.J. Ruhlman.

The Pirates added three runs in the fourth inning thanks to a two-triple from Joe Poduslenko and a sacrifice fly from Zack Weigel.

Lafayette got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when Alex Nickles drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Tyler Hudson, but Seton Hall answered right back in the bottom of the sixth when Weigel drove in two more runs with a single up the middle.

The Pirates added another pair in the eighth inning when Kyle Grimm delivered an RBI single before scoring himself on a Lafayette throwing error.

The Leopards set the final score when they tallied two unearned runs in the top of the ninth - the first courtesy of a Seton Hall fielding error and the second on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Tim Lazor.

The winning pitcher for Seton Hall was starter Anthony Elia (1-1), who tossed four shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out four.

The Leopards will return to action this weekend with their home and Patriot League openers, as Holy Cross will visit for a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:05 on Saturday and 12:05 on Sunday.
