EASTON, Pa. - The Holy Cross pitching staff turned in another strong performance on Sunday against the Lafayette baseball team, leading the Crusaders to a pair of wins and a series sweep of the Leopards at Kamine Stadium.
Holy Cross starting pitcher Justin Finan went the distance in game one -- a 7-1 decision for the Crusaders -- to improve his record to 1-1. He allowed just one unearned run on two hits and two walks, while striking out four.
The Leopards scored first in the contest when junior third baseman Tyler Hudson drove in senior designated hitter Tim Lazor with a sacrifice fly. Lazor had singled and advanced to second on an error before heading to third on a fielder's choice.
Holy Cross got on the board with an unearned run in the fourth before a home run by Anthony Critelli in the sixth put the Crusaders in the lead. Holy Cross tacked on four more unearned runs in the seventh to set the final score.
Holy Cross claimed game two by a score of 9-0 and was fueled by seven shutout innings from starting pitcher Brendan King, who permitted only three hits, one walk and a hit batsman.
The Crusaders used the aid of three first-inning errors to build a 2-0 lead before adding a third run in the fourth on a double by Bill Schlich. Jack St. Clair and Critelli provided run-scoring hits in the fifth before Critelli hit another home run in the sixth to push the Holy Cross lead to 7-0. A pair of insurance runs in the ninth set the final score.
Lafayette freshman Drew Aherne recorded his first collegiate hit in game two.
Holy Cross improved to 9-14 overall with a 4-0 Patriot League record with the sweep, while Lafayette fell to 2-13, 0-4.
Lafayette will return to action on Tuesday, when the Leopards travel to Villanova for a quarterfinal contest in the annual Liberty Bell Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
