PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - Despite out-hitting Villanova by a 12-9 margin, the Lafayette baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to the Wildcats on Wednesday afternoon at Villanova Ballpark in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic.
Nine different Leopards recorded at least one hit in the contest, with two apiece coming from Brett Thompson, James McCool and Connor McMahon. McCool, a senior who did not play last year, registered his first hits and scored his first run since 2013. McMahon, a junior who is one of the Leopards' most relied upon relief pitchers, tallied the first two hits of his career from the plate as the designated hitter before pitching a scoreless eighth inning on the mound.
Villanova (9-14) started the game's scoring in the third inning with an unearned run off of Lafayette starter Mitch Leeds. Emmanuel Morris reached second on a fielding error before coming around to score on a double from Donovan May.
The Wildcats extended their lead to 3-0 in the third. After singling to center field, Kevin Jewitt made it all the way to third on a wild pitch before coming home on a single by Eric Lowe. Later in the inning, Jeff Courter scored the other run after reaching on a fielder's choice, moving to second on a balk and touching home on a base hit from Brian Trabulsi.
Lafayette (2-14) finally got to Villanova starter Mike Sgaramella in the top of the fifth. McMahon and McCool started the inning with back-to-back base hits before Jackson Kramer delivered his first double of the season to score McMahon and move McCool to third. McCool soon came home on a wild pitch by Sgaramella.
Villanova added an insurance run in the sixth when a Courter groundout plated Max Beermann.
Lafayette managed a run in the eighth when Kramer hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded that scored junior Campbell Lipe, but Villanova reliever Max Almonte closed the game out in the ninth to earn his first save.
The Leopards will return to action this weekend with a four-game Patriot League series at home against Army. A doubleheader with a start time of noon is scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday.
