ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Lafayette took Navy to 12 innings in game one and then out-hit the Midshipmen in game two, but lost both ends of the Patriot League doubleheader on Sunday at Max Bishop Stadium.
Navy improved to 26-13 overall and 8-4 in the Patriot League with the sweep, while Lafayette fell to 7-18 overall and 5-7 in conference play.
Game one was scheduled for seven innings but went almost twice that long, with Lafayette starter Toby Schwartz tossing a career-high 10 innings on 125 pitches. He allowed two runs on eight hits with no walks, while striking out six.
Lafayette took a 2-0 lead in the third thanks to three consecutive two-out hits. Michael Coniglio started the rally with a double to left field before coming around to score when Alex Woinski singled up the middle. Woinski then scored all the way from first when Campbell Lipe delivered his third double of the weekend to left-center.
Navy knotted the game at 2-2 in the fifth. After getting hit by a pitch, Logan Knowles scored on a triple to left-center from Robert Currie. Brad Borosak immediately brought Currie home with a single to right.
The next six and-a-half innings saw just six combined hits until Ben McGrath led off the bottom of 12th for Navy with a single to right. Two batters later, Travis Blue hit a single of his own down the right-field line to move McGrath to third. Currie followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to allow McGrath to tag up from third, ending the game in walk-off fashion, 3-2.
Lafayette looked to turn things around in game two and got off to a good start when Woinski slammed a solo home run to left field in the top of the first.
In the bottom of the second, Adrian Chinnery singled up the middle to score McGrath from second for the Midshipmen. After Chinnery took second base on the throw home, he moved to third on a wild pitch and scampered home on a throwing error to give Navy a 2-1 advantage.
Navy broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with six runs on seven hits, headlined by a bases-loaded triple from Sean Trent. Lafayette got a run back in the fifth when Lipe drove in Conglio with an RBI single, and Steven Cohen shrunk the Navy lead to 8-4 in the sixth when he swatted his team-high fourth home run of the season to score himself and Brett Thompson.
The Leopards continued to chip away at Navy in the eighth inning, when back-to-back RBI singles from Cohen and Coniglio cut the deficit to 8-6, but it was too little, too late as Navy's Sam Sorenson closed it out in the ninth to earn his third save.
Lafayette banged out 13 hits in the nightcap, with Coniglio leading the way with three. Four other Leopards had two hits in the game including Tyler Hudson, who collected a team-high five hits throughout the doubleheader.
The Leopards will return to action in Easton on Tuesday, as they welcome Rutgers to Kamine Stadium for a non-conference contest set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
