NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The Lafayette women's lacrosse team turned momentum around, pulling even from an 8-4 second-half deficit to force overtime on Saturday in New Rochelle, N.Y. However, Iona tallied two-of-three overtime goals to send the Leopards home defeated with a 13-12 loss.
Sophomore Maggie Carver was excellent on the afternoon, recording five goals to lead the Leopards' attack. Senior Sarah Malone and sophomore Kirsten Wilhelmsen joined Carver as multiple goal-scorers with two apiece for Lafayette.
After falling behind 5-1 early, the Maroon and White settled in, working to pull within three at 7-4 into the halftime break. An early Iona tally to open the second half put the Gaels in front by an 8-4 margin with just over 26 minutes remaining in the game.
From that point forward, Lafayette was determined to get back in the game, though, as five of the next six goals came off Leopard crosses to pull the game even at 9-9. Iona responded with two of its own to reclaim the lead at 11-9, but two late tallies from Wilhelmsen and classmate Ashley Tedesco sent the game into overtime tied at 11 apiece.
In the first three-minute overtime session, Iona won the draw control and was able to stall for over two minutes before beating Raymond with 45 seconds remaining on the clock. Wilhelmsen got a shot off before the time expired, but it was saved as the Leopards switched sides down one, 12-11.
The Leopards took just 32 seconds to even the game again in the second period as Carver notched her fifth of the game to tie it at 12-12. Unfortunately, the Gaels won the ensuing draw and were able to convert on a free-position opportunity with 23 seconds left for the winning goal in a 13-12 win.
Freshman goalie Anna Raymond was solid between the pipes in the final game of her rookie campaign with seven saves on the afternoon. The Leopards led the way in shots, 32-24, and draw controls, 16-12, as well as converting clears at a 100 percent success rate, going 9-for-9. Ground balls were even at nine for each side.
Lafayette finishes its 2015 season with an overall record of 4-13.
