LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lafayette baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader over Bucknell on Sunday at Depew Field, claiming the series 3-1 after splitting with the Bison on Saturday. The Leopards have now won eight Patriot League games this year -- their highest total since winning 10 during the 2011 season.
Lafayette (10-19-1, 8-8) claimed game one by a score of 3-2 behind a complete-game effort from starting pitcher Toby Schwartz. The senior left-hander pitched all seven innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks.
The Leopard offense staked an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an RBI double from Campbell Lipe and a run-scoring groundout from Tim Lazor.
Bucknell (19-20, 5-11) tallied its first run in the fourth on a Rob Krentzman sac fly, but Lafayette got it right back in the fifth when Steven Cohen singled home Brett Thompson, who had led off with a double.
Bucknell managed a run in the seventh thanks to an error and a passed ball, but the threat was harmless as Schwartz induced three consecutive groundouts to end the contest.
Junior relief pitcher Ari Kaufman made his first start from the mound in game two and was solid, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk over five innings to help the Leopards to a 7-4 victory.
Lafayette trailed 3-2 after seven innings, but scored five runs with the help of three Bucknell errors in the eighth to take the lead. The decisive frame was headlined by a three-run homer from Alex Woinski.
Bucknell added a run in the bottom half of the eighth, but Lafayette's Connor McMahon pitched a perfect ninth to seal the win and earned his fourth save.
Lafayette now holds a three-game lead on Bucknell and Army with four games to play, and holds the tiebreaker over both. The Leopards trail Lehigh by one game for third place and the two will clash next weekend at Kamine Stadium.
