EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette baseball team completed its first Patriot League series sweep since 2007 on Sunday at Kamine Stadium, taking both ends of a doubleheader from Army by scores of 8-7 and 11-5.
The last time the Leopards (6-14, 4-4) took four in a row from a conference foe was against Bucknell during their championship season eight years ago. Lafayette is riding its first four-game winning streak since early March of last season. Army's record fell to 14-14, 3-5.
The Lafayette offense piled up 25 hits over the two games on Sunday, and when combined with the 22 hits from Saturday's doubleheader, the team batting average improved by 35 points over the weekend.
Several Leopards had outstanding performances on Sunday, but junior outfielder Michael Coniglio led the way by going 5-for-7 with a pair of triples and four runs scored. Junior infielders Jackson Kramer and Tyler Hudson each tallied four hits during the doubleheader, with Kramer collecting a team-high four RBIs on three doubles. Freshman shortstop Steven Cohen cracked two home runs in game one, while junior first baseman Campbell Lipe added one of his own.
In game one, Lafayette trailed 4-2 midway through the fourth, but that's when Cohen and Lipe each delivered two-run homers to swing the momentum in Lafayette's favor. Insurance runs in the fifth and sixth proved valuable, as Army threatened with three runs in the top of the seventh before junior relief pitcher Connor McMahon nailed down his second save of the season.
Senior Toby Schwartz earned the victory from the mound in the 8-7 triumph, tossing six innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts to match David Bednar's season high from last weekend. Schwartz would later play a vital role in game two, when he went 3-for-5 with the bat as the first baseman.
Lafayette found itself down 5-0 midway through the second contest, but plated five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth to take command. The Leopards then scored two runs apiece over the next three frames to set the final score at 11-5, while junior reliever Ari Kaufman shut down the Army offense. Kaufman, who entered in the top of the fifth, retired the first 11 batters he faced and allowed just one hit over 4.1 innings of work to pick up his first victory.
Lafayette is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday at Kamine Stadium against St. Joseph's, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
