ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Lafayette baseball team saw its season come to an end on Sunday afternoon, as Navy starting pitcher George Coughlin threw a complete-game shutout to lift the Midshipmen to an 8-0 victory and a berth into the Patriot League Finals.

Coughlin retired 20 of the first 21 batters that he faced including 11 in a row at one point, and allowed only three hits over his nine innings of work to earn the victory. He permitted only one base runner -- a hit batsman -- until there were two outs in the seventh inning.

Navy (36-18) advances to the championship series against Lehigh next weekend, while Lafayette (14-27-1) is eliminated, but not before winning its first postseason game since 2009.

Coughlin moved to 7-3 with the win, while Lafayette starter John Cain fell to 1-3 with the loss. Cain was great throughout his first five frames but Navy got to him in the sixth, and he finished with five runs allowed on four hits and three walks in his 21 batters faced.

Cain only allowed two hits over the first five innings while striking out five. His only mistake during that span came during the third inning when he allowed a lead-off walk to Logan Knowles, who eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Robert Currie.

Navy broke the game open in the sixth, however, scoring five runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batsman to provide Coughlin some breathing room. Another lead-off walk, followed by two singles, made it 2-0 before Cain intentionally walked Sean Trent to load the bases for a potential force out. Cory Spera came on in relief and induced a fielder's choice to get the first out, but he hit Connor Deneen with a pitch to bring home the game's third run. Following a pop out, Ben McGrath delivered a bases-clearing double to give the Midshipmen a 6-0 advantage.

Lafayette was able to break up Coughlin's no-hit bid in the top of the seventh, when Toby Schwartz and Campbell Lipe produced a pair of two-out singles, but Coughlin ended the threat with one of his five strikeouts on the day.

Navy added an insurance run on an RBI single from Trent in the bottom of the seventh, and another in the eighth on an RBI double by Leland Saile to set the final score.
