May 4, 2015 CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Lafayette freshman pitcher John Cain was announced as the Corvias Patriot League Baseball Rookie of the Week on Monday after leading the Leopards to a 10-1 defeat of NJIT on Sunday.
Cain did not allow an earned run over six innings of work to pick his first collegiate victory. The left-hander gave up just four hits and two walks while striking out five and permitting only one unearned run. With the effort, the Middletown, N.Y., product lowered his ERA for the season from 4.24 to 3.60.
Cain is the second Leopard to earn Rookie of the Week honors this year, following Steven Cohen's nods from March 2nd and April 6th. Michael Coniglio (April 6th) and Campbell Lipe (April 20th) were previously named the Player of the Week, while Toby Schwartz earned Pitcher of the Week accolades on April 27th.
Sophomore Daivd Bednar and senior Tim Lazor garnered honorable mentions from the league for their efforts against NJIT as well.
Lafayette returns to action this weekend when it visits Navy for the semifinal series of the Patriot League Tournament. Best-of-three action begins Saturday at noon.
