Lightning Cancels Out Offensive Outburst

Aug. 24, 2015

EASTON, Pa. - After an hour and 50 minute lightning delay after stoppage of play in the 57th minute, the Lafayette women's soccer team tried to get to the necessary 70 minutes of completion needed for an official game with NJIT on Monday evening. However, with lightning continuing to strike in the area, the game had to be called with the Leopards in front, 4-0. The game is officially listed as postponed and none of the statistics will count toward official season numbers.

The offense came alive for its biggest output since the season opener a year ago when it put four goals up on Saint Peter's in Jersey City, N.J. on Aug. 26, 2014. Along with junior Kaelin King who tallied a pair of goals, junior Melissa Lynskey added a score and an assist, while freshman Katie Brannigan had her unofficial first collegiate goal to go along with a pair of helpers.

The defense was strong again, giving up just four shots on the day, compared to 12 for the hosts. Corners were 5-3 in the Leopards' favor and junior Danielle Sedillo made a pair of saves in the 57 minutes of shutout play.

King got the scoring started in the 12th minute off a corner from sophomore Olivia Heitz. Heitz's service was popped high in the air and won by Brannigan, who sent it toward the right corner of the net. King was in the right spot to deflect it past the outstretched arm of NJIT goalkeeper Samantha Bersett into the net for the opening tally.

Less than 20 minutes later, the Leopards won a free kick from about the 30-yard mark on the right side. Wissler sent a ball to the center of the six-yard box where a cutting Brannigan worked positionally in front of her defender and sent a perfect side volley into the corner of the net for her milestone goal.

Another freshman almost got in on the action in the 40th minute as an angled shot off the foot of Alex Stanford was saved off the line by a sliding foot of Dana Schules. That chance moved the game into the break with the score at 2-0.

The Maroon and White didn't let up out of the break as three Leopards connected for the third goal in the 46th minute. A Brannigan chip found the head of Lynskey, who flicked it on into the box for a cutting King. King beat the oncoming goalie to the ball, worked a touch to her left around the diving Bersett and eased it into the back of the net.

Less than 10 minutes later, a mental lapse by the NJIT defense led to the fourth goal as Lynskey cut off a back pass and slotted it in to make it 4-0 with 36:38 to play. Just over two minutes after that goal, play was called and the teams cleared to their locker rooms for an hour and 50 minutes. Play tried to continue, but the conditions were ultimately too dangerous.

The Leopards remain 1-0-0 on the year and return to Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium on Sunday for a matchup with Saint Peter's at 12 p.m.
