BALTIMORE - Lafayette and Loyola had played to draws in each of the first two Patriot League meetings between the schools, and tonight's 2015 conference opener was deadlocked 1-1 after 90 minutes as well.
The Greyhounds, however, broke through in overtime, with Rosy Hayes firing in a golden goal 7:06 into the first extra session for the 2-1 victory. The loss drops the Leopards to 5-2 on the season, while Loyola improves to 3-5.
Kaelin King picked up the goal for the Maroon and White. Her marker, which leveled up the game in the 71st minute, was her fourth of the season and third in the last two contests.
Loyola had a 7-1 edge in shots in the opening half, but each team managed only one shot on goal in the frame. The Greyhounds broke through for the first strike in the 59th minute. Kelly O'Brien stopped the initial effort by Loyola's Jess Soldiviero, but she could not prevent Charlotte Miller's rebound from finding the back of the net.
King's equalizer came on Lafayette's third shot of the half. She was led in on the play by Katie Brannigan, who registered her team-leading fourth assist of the season.
The Greyhounds had the only two shots on goal in the final 19 minutes of regulation, but O'Brien stopped both attempts. The sophomore ended the night with six saves in her first start of 2015.
Hayes' game-winner was the only shot for either squad in overtime. Loyola finished with a 14-6 advantage in shots, while the Leopards had five of the game's nine corner kicks.
After three-straight road games, Lafayette returns to Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium next Saturday for a 7 p.m. matchup against Army.
