BRONX, N.Y. Fordham rushed for 516 yards en route to a 58-34 victory over Lafayette in Patriot League action on Saturday at Coffey Field.
Fordham (3-2, 1-0) junior RB Chase Edmonds ended with 17 carries for 359 yards and four touchdowns to break his own school rushing record (348 yards). He scored on runs of
29, 19, 74 and 67 yards. With his second score of the game, he became the Patriot League's career leader for points scored. Fordham QB Kevin Anderson was also elusive, rushing for 108 yards and a touchdown while throwing for three more.
The Leopards' defense recorded the first score of the game on Fordham's first drive. Phillip Parham picked off Anderson and ran it back 35 yards for a touchdown, the first pick six of Parham's career. Lafayette led 7-0.
It took just two offensive plays on Fordham's next drive to even the score. A 23-yard strike from Anderson to Phazahn Odom set up a 29-yard touchdown run by Edmonds.
Anderson did the damage on Fordham's next scoring drive, rushing for 20, 14, 7 and finally 33 yards for a touchdown. He fumbled before picking the ball up and weaving his way through the Lafayette defense.
As the first quarter wore on, the Leopards inched closer converting a fourth down near midfield on an 11-yard pass from Searfoss to Kyle Mayfield. Jacob Bissell then booted a 35-yard field goal to make it 14-10.
Edmonds did the bulk of the work for Fordham on its next drive, racking up 71 yards before Anderson connected with Corey Caddle for an 11-yard score.
The Leopards' responded. Blake Searfoss, who started for the injured Drew Reed, hit Joey Chenoweth for a 65-yard catch and run, as Lafayette pulled within 20-17 with 1:13 left in the quarter. It was the Leopards' longest play from scrimmage this season.
The Rams extended the lead to 27-17 on Edmonds' 19-yard run just a minute into the second quarter.
On the ensuing drive, Searfoss hit Matt Mrazek for 21 yards on 3rd-and-10. Mrazek finished the day with a game-high nine catches for 88 yards. Later on the drive on fourth down, Searfoss scrambled and hit Dylan Wadsworth for 22 yards to put Lafayette 1st-and-goal to the Fordham seven. Lafayette settled for a 35-yard Bissell field goal, but pulled within one score, 27-20.
Fordham put away the game with two scores before the end of the first half. Edmonds ripped off a 74-yard TD run with 1:52 left and a turnover allowed Anderson (12-18-1 for 181 yards, 3 TDs) to throw a 22-yard score 18 seconds later to give Fordham a 41-20 lead.
The Lafayette offense put together two long drives at the end of the third and fourth quarters. DeSean Brown capped a 13-play, 73-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown run. Searfoss (25-41-2 for 325 yards, 1 TD) ended a 14-play, 93-yard drive with a seven-yard option run to put the final at 58-34.
Lafayette (1-5, 0-2) returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Army for a noon kick off.
