Big Late Innings Push Pards Past Delaware State

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Lafayette broke open a 3-3 game with three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth en route to a 10-3 win over Delaware State on Saturday afternoon in the Lafayette Ford Lincoln of Fayetteville Showcase.

Delaware State took the early lead, using three straight singles and then a Leopard fielding error to lead 1-0 after two innings. In the second, a single, sacrifice bunt and an RBI-single from Rochelle Sablay made it 2-0.

The Leopards (2-2) took their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the third. Jenna Didio (2-for-3) and Jenna Orlando each drew walks, but the Leopards already had two outs in the inning. Maddie Wensel came through with an RBI-single up the middle. With runners on second and third, Delaware State walked Allison Brown to load the bases. No. 6 hitter Sam Sweigart gave the Leopards a 3-2 lead with a two-run base knock.

The Hornets tied the game in the top of the fifth as Sandy Hawthorne singled home Chloe Oro who had reached on a two-out triple. Lafayette starter Stephanie Thomas ended the mini rally by striking out Sablay with a 2-2 pitch.

With the game knotted at 3-3, Brown doubled in one run and Brooke Wensel drove in two more with a single, all with two outs in the inning. Lafayette led 6-3.

Thomas retired Delaware State (1-2) in order in the sixth and then the Maroon and White blew open the game in the home half of the inning. Orlando and Miranda Skurla each doubled in runs and Maddie Wensel followed with a two-run homer run as Lafayette closed out the 10-3 final.

Thomas threw all seven to even her record at 1-1. She allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits with a strikeout. Alexis Goldsby (0-1) took the loss for Delaware State, giving up three runs on three hits.

Lafayette closes out the tournament on Sunday vs. Rhode Island with first pitch slated for 12:30 p.m. at Boseman Field.

NOTES: The Leopards scored 10 runs for the second time this season, also achieving the feat in the season opener on Friday vs. Rhode Island. The last season Lafayette had 10 or more runs in two games was 2010, beating Princeton 14-4 on March 28 while losing 13-11 to Penn on April 14.
