Change in Scenery
Coming off a 2-3 performance at a tournament hosted by UNC-Wilmington, the Leopards will compete in the UMBC First Pitch Classic this weekend. The tournament was scheduled to be held in Baltimore, Md. but has since been moved due to field conditions and will now be played in Princess Anne, Md. on the campus of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES).
Offense Starts Hot
The Leopards topped their opponents in every offensive category except for RBIs (19-18). Eleven of the Leopards' 43 hits earned them extra bases last week. Lafayette averaged .303 at the plate while its opponents finished with a .252 average. Jenna Didio, Jenna Orlando, Morgan Biddle and Samantha Sweigart left last weekend's play batting over .300, while Brooke Wensel and Allison Brown are each hitting at .294.
Rookie of the Week
Freshmen Brooke Wensel earned Patriot League Softball Rookie of the week for her five RBIs and .294 average during Lafayette's outing in North Carolina. Wensel had a clutch double in the Leopards' first game that gave Lafayette the lead. She notched a hit in four of the five games played and is the first Lafayette softball player to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors since 2008 when Stacey Kushner won the award twice and Kerry Griffin secured the honor once.
Weekend Schedule
Lafayette opens up its weekend tournament on Saturday at 11 a.m. vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore. Later that afternoon, the Leopards take on UMBC in a 3:15 p.m. game. Sunday morning opens with another contest against Maryland-Eastern Shore at 10:30 a.m. Lafayette closes out the weekend with a 12:45 p.m. first pitch against UMBC.
