PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Lafayette stole seven bases and four different players drove in runs in a 4-3 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) on Saturday in the opening game of the UMBC First Pitch Classic.
In the second inning, Sam Sweigart and Brooke Wensel each connected for doubles, with Wensel's two-bagger plating Sweigart for the 1-0. Wensel later scored on Morgan Biddle's infield single as Lafayette led 2-0.
UMES (2-3) answered with three runs in the bottom of the third. Vanessa Gomez tripled in the No. 9 hitter and Kiana Peterson belted a two-run home run with Gomez aboard as the Hawks snatched the lead.
Lafayette (3-3) tied the game in the fifth. Jenna Orlando reached on a one-out single and then stole second. Maddie Wensel's base knock to left knitted it at 3-3.
The Leopards' manufactured the go-ahead run in the sixth. Sweigart ripped a lead-off single and stole second. Rebecca Dvorak pinch hit for Biddle, driving in Sweigart for the 4-3 advantage.
Lafayette starter Kristyn Marinelli (2-1) retired the Hawks in order in the bottom of the seventh to pick up her second win of the season. Marinelli allowed three runs on four hits, striking out six and walking four. Kaitlyn Hitch (1-1) threw the middle innings for UMES, allowing two runs on five hits.
Lafayette plays UMBC at 3:15 p.m. in the second game of the tournament.
NOTES: While possibly a school record (single-game box scores are not available for the early years of the program), the Leopards' seven stolen bases are certainly the most since the Patriot League era began in 2000. The seven swipes also bests the team's season total of six for the entire 2015 season.
Orlando finished with two stolen bases, while Sweigart, Biddle, Brooke Wensel and Stephanie Thomas had one stolen base apiece.
The tournament was originally scheduled to be played on the UMBC campus, but was moved to UMES because of field conditions.
