March 22, 2016 Box Score
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Lafayette twice rallied from multiple-run deficits at Wofford on Tuesday night, but for the second-consecutive game the eighth inning was not kind to the Maroon and White. The host Terriers scored six times in that frame, breaking open what had been an 8-8 contest, and they closed the door in the ninth to pick up the 14-8 victory.
Sophomore AJ Kloehn and senior Jackson Kramer each hit their first collegiate homers for Lafayette (4-10), while Campbell Lipe added a pair of doubles and three RBIs in the defeat. Kramer scored three of the Leopards' eight runs from the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
Cleanup hitter Brett Hash had a home run and four RBIs to lead Wofford (15-7), which won its third-straight game overall.
The Terriers held a 4-1 advantage after the game's first three innings. Kloehn belted a two-out home run to left field in the second to get the Maroon and White on the board, but Wofford managed two runs apiece in the first and third innings.
Both teams put up crooked numbers in the fourth, combining for seven runs in the frame. Lafayette pushed across three in its trip to the plate. Lipe hit the first of his two doubles on the evening to left center to score Kramer, who had reached base on a leadoff walk. Andrew Landolfi then chased Wofford starter Austin Higginbotham three batters later with a bases loaded single to left to tie the score.
The deadlock did not last long, as the Terriers used a single, a walk and a three-run dinger from Alec Paradowski to regain the lead. Wofford expanded its edge to four on a two-out single from Cody Miller.
The Leopards, though, continued to battle, and they quickly cut that deficit in half in the top of the fifth. Kramer's homer came with two outs on the frame, and back-to-back doubles from Steven Cohen and Lipe made it 8-6.
Lafayette, aided by a Wofford miscue, completed its comeback in the seventh. Spencer Rouse started the rally with a leadoff single, and after advancing to second on a wild pitch, he scored when a throwing error by Terrier pitcher Jordan Accetta allowed Kramer to reach on a grounder. Kramer was moved to third on a single by Cohen, and Lipe brought him home after reaching on a fielder's choice.
Connor McMahon kept the Terriers off the scoreboard in bottom-half of the inning, but the hosts struck for six off the senior right-hander in the eighth. Demetrius Jennings drew a one-out bases-loaded walk to score the go-ahead run, and Wofford padded its lead with four two-out runs.
Tonight's setback moves the Leopards to 2-2 on their five-game trip down south. They can still secure a winning trip tomorrow night, when they head back across Spartanburg for a rematch with USC-Upstate. Wednesday's contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
Notes:
