SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Lafayette wrapped up its five-game southern Spring Break road trip with an 8-4 defeat at the hands of USC-Upstate on Wednesday evening. The Spartans plated seven runs in the game's first four innings to seal a second win over the Leopards in the span of three days.
Alex Woinski accounted for a majority of the offensive attack for the Maroon and White, collecting three hits and driving in three of the team's four runs. The three-hit contest was his second in the past four contests, and Woinski finished the trip with a .400 batting average, three doubles and five RBIs.
Drew Aherne, making his second-consecutive start in right field, also had a big day for Lafayette, finishing with a career-high three hits in four at-bats.
Woinski have the Leopards a 2-0 advantage in their first trip to the plate. Stepping up to the plate with runners on second and third and two outs, the designated hitter came through on the eighth pitch of his at-bat with a single to right field. That scored both Michael Coniglio and Jackson Kramer, who had led off the game with back-to-back singles.
Upstate (11-12) moved in front in the bottom half of the first on a three-run homer to right-center by Charlie Carpenter. After registering three singles to score their fourth run in the following inning, the Spartans again used the long ball to their advantage in the third, as Anthony Vaglica took Lafayette starter Ari Kaufman deep to make it 6-3. The Leopards had added a third tally in the top of the frame when Coniglio came home from second base on a passed ball and a throwing error.
Lafayette's final run came in the fifth. Steven Cohen hit a ground-rule double to left-center with one out, and Woinski brought him in with a single to left two batters later.
Kaufman fell to 1-2 on the year after giving up six runs in three innings of work. David Giusti had a strong relief outing for the Leopards, striking out three Spartans over three innings while surrendering just one run. Ryan Callanan, meanwhile, struck out the side in a scoreless eighth inning.
Coniglio and Kramer each added stolen bases for the Maroon and White, with Coniglio improving to 8-for-8 on stolen bases so far this spring. He went 2-for-4 with a walk, ending the trip with three multi-hit outings and a team-high seven runs scored.
Lafayette (4-11) has two more games away from home on Saturday before returning for a home doubleheader the following afternoon. All four of those contests will take place against Penn, with Saturday's twin bill in Philadelphia set to begin at 12 p.m.
