BOSTON, Mass. --The Boston University pitching staff held Lafayette to a combined five hits in both ends of a Saturday doubleheader, winning 6-0 and 4-1.
In game one, BU's Melanie Russell (6-7) struck out 10 and allowed two hits for the victory. The Terriers staked her to a 5-0 lead after three innings. Emma Wong singled in a pair in the first and Jilee Schanda (double) and Gabi Martinez (single) plated two more in the second. Wong's lead-off triple in the third inning lead to the fifth run on a sac fly.
Offensively, the Leopards managed lead-off singles in third (Maddie Wensel) and seventh (Jenna Orlando) innings, their lone baserunners of the game.
Kristyn Marinelli (3-8) was the pitcher of record for the Leopards, allowing five runs on six hits in two innings. Lindsey Cherry threw the last four frames, surrendering one run on two hits. Each pitcher struck out two and walked three.
In the second game, Boston U. (18-20, 4-4) broken open a one-run game with two runs in the sixth in a 4-1 final.
Lafayette starter Stacy Gordon held the Terriers scoreless through the first three innings, stranding a pair of baserunners in each frame.
The Leopards scored first, plating a run in the top of the fourth. Stephanie Thomas singled home Jenna Orlando who had reached on an error. Lafayette led 1-0.
Boston U. finally reached Gordon in the fourth as Brittany Younan (3-for-4) doubled in two runs for a 2-1 advantage.
In the fifth, the Leopards put runners on the corners following a single by Jenna Didio and a double by Samantha Sweigart. Boston U. went to the bullpen for first game starter, Russell. She struck out Orlando to end the threat.
Back-to-back singles led off the Terriers' sixth inning, prompting Lafayette head coach Jexx Varner to lift Gordon (5 IP, 12 H, 4ER) in favor of Cherry (1IP, 0ER, 1H). Boston U. scored two runs in the inning to stretch its lead to 4-1.
Russell struck out the side in the seventh, ending the game and earning the save in relief of Lauren Hynes (4.2 IP, 3H, 0ER, 1BB, 3K). Russell finished the afternoon with 16 strikeouts in two games.
Lafayette (12-26, 2-9) will close out the series on Sunday at noon.
