PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Allison Brown hit a solo home run in the fourth and singled in another run in the fifth in a 5-1 win in the nightcap victory over La Salle on Wednesday. In the first game, a five-run third inning Explorers led to a 7-2 final.
In the second game, La Salle (9-17) got to Lafayette starter Stacy Gordon for a run in the first, scoring after three straight singles and a sac fly.
The Leopards got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning and tied the game with one big swing by Brown who led off the inning with a home run. The next batter, Miranda Skurla, reached base on a single and moved to second on a wild pitch, prompting a pitching change. Kristyn Marinelli doubled her in and the Leopards added another run on a fielding error to lead 4-1.
Lafayette added two more in the fifth. Brooke Wensel started the inning by pulling a single to left. A wild offering moved her into scoring position and Brown did the rest of the work, plating Wensel with a single back through the box. Brown later scored on Maddie Wensel's sac fly as Lafayette led 5-1.
Gordon retired La Salle in order in the fourth and fifth and did not give up a hit in the sixth. In the seventh, La Salle started the inning with a pair of singles and eventually loaded the bases with two outs before Gordon got the final out of the game. She allowed one run on six hits (all singles) with three strikeouts and a walk to even her record at 3-3. Marlo Roadcap (0-7) took the loss and was responsible for two runs on four hits.
In the first game of the afternoon against the Atlantic 10 foe, Lafayette scored via doubles by lead-off hitter Samantha Sweigart and No. 3 hitter Brooke Wensel.
It was the five-run third inning that put La Salle comfortably ahead. Christina Bascara hit a three-run home run off Lafayette starting pitcher Marinelli. and Erica Reis doubled in two Explorer runs.
Lafayette got one back in the top of the next inning when Sweigart singled in Morgan Biddle who had reached on an error. La Salle led 5-2. The hosts clinched the game in the sixth with Michelle Hagarty's two-run home run off Lindsey Cherry.
Marinelli (2-6) took the loss, surrendering five runs on seven hits in four innings. Mary Cate Scott (7-3) struck out four in the win, allowing two runs on 11 hits.
Maddie Wensel had three hits while Sweigart, Jenna Orlando and Jenna Didio each had multiple-hit games in the opener.
The Leopards (8-21) return to Patriot League play on Saturday and Sunday, hosting a three-game series with Holy Cross. First pitch both days is scheduled for noon.
