EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette volleyball team had a hard fought match Sunday evening, but it was the Bison that came out on top in four sets (12-25, 25-23, 22-25, 14-25).
The opening set saw the Bison open an early lead on the Leopards, opening an eight point lead to force Lafayette into a timeout with the score at 9-1. The Maroon and White battled back taking advantage of two Bucknell hitting errors to cut their lead to five with the score at 15-10. It was all Bison form there, as Bucknell finished out the set on a 10-0 run to win 25-12.
Lafayette battled back and forth with Bucknell in the early goings of the second set, with neither side gaining much momentum. Back-to-back kills form Alexis Capers and Katrina Ruggiero forced the Bison into a timeout with the Leopards leading 18-16. The Maroon and White used three straight kills from Christian Luhnow to close out the set to win it 25-21.
The third set started the same as the second, with neither side gaining much separation from the other. A kill from Julia Howard and a Bucknell hitting error forced the Bison into a timeout with the Leopards up 18-17. Bucknell took the lead back at 19-18, and held onto it from there, taking the set 25-22.
Bucknell opened an early lead in the fourth and final set, using a 5-0 run to open a 15-7 lead. The Leopards pulled within five after taking advantage of three straight Bison errors, but they could not get closer than that as Bucknell held on to win the final set 25-14.
Sonia Musso and Luhnow led the Leopards with nine kills apiece. Howard finished with a match high 31 assists while Lexie Caraveo chipped in 14 digs.
The Maroon and White are back in action Friday when they welcome American to Kirby Sports Center for a 7 p.m. contest.
