BALTIMORE, Md. - Christian Luhnow and Carly Kutschke posted nine and eight kills, respectively, to lead the Lafayette volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Coppin State on the road on Sunday afternoon.
It was a dominant performance for the Maroon and White, winning the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-22. After dropping a quick third by a 25-7 score, the Leopards stormed back to clinch it with a 25-19 fourth-set score. The win moves Lafayette to 4-15 on the year overall and drops Coppin State to 1-19 on the season.
The first opened evenly before a five-point run, including a pair of Tori Smith aces, put the advantage on Lafayette's side at 10-5. That lead grew as high as 12 at 21-9 as the Leopards cruised to the 25-17 victory.
In the second, it was the home side that jumped out to an early 5-3 advantage. The Leopards kept it close before four straight errors from Coppin State pushed the Leopards out to a late five-point lead, 23-18. Luhnow's kill off a feed from Julia Howard finished it off, 25-22.
A forgettable third set that saw just seven points from the Maroon and White set up a refocused group in the fourth. Lafayette won the first six points and nine of the first 10 to take a stranglehold on the match. The Eagles were able to storm back and tie it at 10 and kept it even through the final stretch, but four straight points to end it, including two Luhnow kills, sent the Leopards to the 3-1 win.
Howard was the team's assists leader, earning 27 of the 28 helpers on the day. Alexis Capers and Smith posted three blocks apiece, while Lexie Caraveo was a defensive stalwart, digging 23 balls on the afternoon.
Next up for the Maroon and White is a return to Kirby Sports Center on Tuesday, getting back to Patriot League play for a matchup with Loyola at 7 p.m.
