EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team is known for the impact performances of its seniors, but it was the sophomore class that shined on Sunday afternoon in an 18-3 victory over Longwood at Fisher Stadium.

The sophomore class netted 15 of the team's 18 goals on the afternoon, with the other three coming from two seniors (Charlotte Rath and Kirsten Wilhelmsen) and a freshman (Emily Wingate). Jane Kirby, Emma Novick and Mairead Janzer each posted a game-high four goals apiece, while Hannah Davey chipped in with two and Kayla Guerin added one of her own.

"The sophomores did a phenomenal job," head coach Alison Fisher said. "We have four seniors that have been four-year starters and are kind of a known entity. It was nice to have the sophomore class show the ability to take some of the pressure off of those seniors, because there will be a lot of attention on them."

It was a dominant performance from start to finish for the Maroon and White, who posted a 43-7 edge in shots and allowed just eight successful clears on 24 attempts from the Lancers.

"Our transition defense was outstanding," Fisher added. "With the shot clock, I think we'll see a lot of the high-pressure zone ride, so we have a lot of experience in that. Our kids took a lot of risks today, which is what we were hoping for. They were relentless and it fueled our offense, our settle defense and everything else that we do."

Junior Kristin Schaen had a successful day at the circle, leading the way for a 13-10 edge in draw controls. Sophomore Allie Abacherli made just one save in the first half to pick up the win, while junior Anna Raymond pulled second-half duties and tallied a pair of stops.

The game was fairly tight in the opening 10 minutes as the Leopards took a 3-1 lead into the middle stages of the opening half. However, an eight-goal run over a period of less than 17 minutes opened up the game at 11-1 in favor of the Maroon and White and Lafayette never looked back, working through the second half for an 18-3 final.

"We've been really excited to play another team," Kirby said. "It was really great to come off an excellent fall season and push the pace, work hard and get the result that we did today."

The Leopards hit the road for the first time on Thursday, traveling to Binghamton for a 4 p.m. contest.
