Leopards Fall in Game Two of Opening Day Doubleheader

Feb. 17, 2017

Final Stats

SAN ANTONIO - A little over an hour after capturing a 10-2 victory over Notre Dame, the Lafayette baseball team returned to the diamond and fell to Saint Louis 24-6 in the second game of the Irish Alamo Invitational.

Steven Cohen led the Leopards (1-1) at the plate with three hits in four at-bats, while Luke Robinson chipped in with two hits and two RBIs.

Saint Louis (1-0) started the game with its first three batters being retired in order. In the bottom half of the first, the Leopards got the top three in their order on base after they each drew a base on balls, but the Billikens successfully worked out of the bases loaded jam unscathed.

The second inning did not play out like the first for Saint Louis though, as they got hot at the plate and recorded 6 hits including four doubles, which helped the Billikens put up nine runs. Saint Louis added some insurance runs in the top of the fourth after Carter Hanford hit a two-out single and later scored on a three-run homer by Ryan Hernandez before back-to-back doubles brought in two more runs.

Saint Louis expanded its lead after tacking on eight additional runs over the course of the next three innings. However, in the bottom of the sixth the Leopards got on the board. Cohen and Alex Woinski led off the inning with a pair of singles and later came around to score once Robinson found the gap in right center for a two-RBI triple. Freshman Trey Durrah then came up to the plate as a pinch hitter and singled through the right side to bring in the run.

Trailing 22-3, the Leopards came up to hit in the eighth and added three more runs. Robinson drew a base on balls to start the inning and would later score on a Mark Glover RBI double to right center. Brandon Posivak was due up next and he grounded out to short, but Jake Sniegocki, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning, came in to score. With Glover still on second, Stephen Cohen came up and shot an RBI single into center.

A pair of runs to begin the ninth would put the Billikens on top 24-6 and they would hold the advantage on their way to their first win of the season.

The Leopards will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon when they take on Incarnate Word at 8 p.m. on day two of the Irish Alamo Invitational.
