LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - When the game was called in the eighth inning due to darkness, Rider was on top 2-0 and grabbed the win over the Lafayette baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at Sonny Pittaro Field.
The Leopards (1-7) went with a committee on the mound as seven different pitchers got at least one inning of work. The seven hurlers pitched brilliantly, allowing just four hits and one earned run through eight frames. Unfortunately, the Leopards offense was unable to generate runs despite picking up seven hits in the contest.
Quentin Bubb and Steven Cohen led the Leopards at the plate with a pair of hits against the Broncs (1-4). Bubb singled and doubled in the game, while Cohen also singled and added a triple.
The Broncs had runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the first and a wild pitch ensued, allowing Rider to plate the first run of the game.
Lafayette had no issues putting runners on as at least one Lafayette player reached safely in seven of the eight innings. The Leopards' best scoring opportunity came in the fourth when Cohen singled to left center and two batters later, Luke Robinson doubled. However, with one out in the inning, the Broncs successfully worked out of the jam.
In the fifth, Richie Tecco led off the inning for Rider with a walk and found himself on third following a passed ball and a grounder to the right side. Riley Mihalik also drew a base on balls, but the fourth ball trickled past the Lafayette catcher and Tecco came in to score to put Rider on top 2-0.
The Leopards put a pair of runners on once again in the sixth once Cohen reached safely after a Broncs' fielding error. Alex Woinski followed and he shot a single into right, allowing the speedy Cohen to get to third. The Broncs made a pitching change with the Leopards threatening and Mike Diorio got Robinson to line out to second before getting John Selsor to ground out into the 1-6-3 double-play to end the inning.
Two more scoring opportunities arose for the Leopards as Dan Leckie doubled in the seventh and Cohen knocked his triple in the eighth, but the Broncs worked out of both innings unscathed and claimed the 2-0 win.
The Leopards will head to the nation's capital this weekend to take part in the D.C. Grays Collegiate Challenge that will begin on Friday with a 3:30 p.m. game against Harvard.
