Baseball Falls to Georgetown in Snowbird Classic Opener

March 10, 2017

Final Stats

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Lafayette baseball team dropped the opening game of the Snowbird Classic to Georgetown 10-4 on Friday night.

The Hoyas (9-6) grabbed an early advantage and had a lot of success at the plate, compiling 14 hits. Despite being held to four runs, the Leopards (2-12) notched 10 hits as a team and the leadoff man, Quentin Bubb, was one of four Leopards' with a multi-hit game as he went 3-for-5 at the plate. The sophomore was responsible for driving in three runs.

Patrick Nelson had a two-hit night and crossed the plate twice, while Spencer Rouse and Dan Leckie each tallied two knocks.

Bubb got the game started with a single to left and following a Rouse double to left, the Leopards had runners on second and third with no outs. However, both Lafayette baserunners were left stranded once Simon Mathews got a pair of strikeouts and the third out of the inning was recorded on a line out to third.

The bottom of the first was playing out in similar fashion when the Hoyas got two on with two outs, but they plated a run once Jake Kuzbel shot an RBI single up the middle. Georgetown put an additional two runners on in the second inning and capitalized on back-to-back RBI singles by Michael Derenzi and Zach Racusin to push the Hoyas' lead to three.

After failing to put a runner in scoring position through three innings, Nelson led off the fifth for the Leopards with a double down the right field line and after Mathews got two consecutive strikeouts, Nelson advanced to third on a wild pitch. Bubb then came up and drove in the run to trim the deficit to two, 3-1.

The Hoyas were quick to counter and pushed their lead to six, 7-1, after scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning on four singles and a double.

In the seventh, Leckie and Nelson recorded back-to-back singles and after both advancing into scoring position with two outs, Bubb brought them both in to score on a two-RBI single through the left side to make it 7-3. However, the Hoyas put a run back on the board once Sammy Stevens homered to right to lead off the bottom of inning.

Georgetown took a 10-3 advantage into the ninth after a two-run eighth inning.

Richard Villa was called upon to pinch hit for AJ Kloehn in the final inning and he hit the ball to right and made his way to second on a fielding error by a Georgetown outfielder. Another Hoyas' fielding error costed them a run as Villa came in to score on the miscue. It would end there for the Leopards though as they could not manufacture any additional runs in the game.

The Snowbird Classic will resume tomorrow afternoon when the Leopards and Hoyas meet again for a 3 p.m. tilt.
