Leopards Downed by Hoyas in Series Finale

March 12, 2017

Final Stats

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Lafayette baseball team was unable to overcome a seven-run deficit and ultimately fell 13-6 to Georgetown on Sunday morning in the Snowbird Classic.

The Hoyas (11-6) were red-hot at the plate and totaled 19 hits in the win over the Leopards (2-14). Eight of Georgetown's nine starters recorded a base hit, including three that had four knocks at the dish.

For Lafayette, five Leopards tallied a multi-hit game, including Quentin Bubb, who set the tone at the leadoff spot by picking up a pair of hits while crossing the plate twice. Dan Leckie added two hits with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Leopards took their first lead of the series in the first inning of play. It started with a double down the left field line by Bubb and after he advanced to third on a passed ball, he was brought in to score on a Spencer Rouse sacrifice fly to deep center.

Georgetown put a pair of runners on in the second once Jake Kuzbel hit an infield single and John Simourian drew a base on balls. After both baserunners were sacrificed over on a bunt, Beau Hall shot a two-RBI single through the left side. It did not end there for the Hoyas as Jake Bernstein singled and Michael Derenzi knocked a two-RBI double into the gap in left center to put Georgetown on top 4-1.

After being held scoreless through three frames, the Hoyas returned to the dish and plated four runs in the sixth to go ahead 8-1.

The Leopards, who did not score since the first, got back on the board in the seventh. Mark Glover doubled down the left field line and after Bubb was hit by a pitch, Rouse came up and doubled into left, bringing home a run.

With Bubb standing on third, Steven Cohen drove him in on a grounder to the left side of the infield. On that same play, Rouse advanced to third and later scored on a wild pitch, trimming the Georgetown lead to four, 8-4.

The deficit was then cut to two once Patrick Nelson led off the eighth with a single to center and scored once Leckie launched a ball over the fence in left field for a two-run home run. However, it ended there for the Maroon and White as the Hoyas finished strong and tallied five runs in the eighth to grab a 13-6 lead and eventual win.

The Leopards will return to the diamond on Thursday when they open up a four-game set with UNC Greensboro with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
