Greensboro, N.C. -- Behind a 13-run second inning, UNCG built a large lead and held on to defeat the Lafayette baseball team 25-7 in the series opener on Thursday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Alex Woinski was one of three Leopards (2-15) to record more than one hit in the game against the Spartans (9-8) as he batted 3-for-5. Quentin Bubb and AJ Kloehn also added a pair of knocks, while Luke Robinson and Brandon Posivak were responsible for driving in five of the team's seven runs.
Bubb singled to lead off the game and advanced to second once Spencer Rouse drew a base on balls. Both runners moved up a base on a Steven Cohen sacrifice bunt before being brought in to score on a two-RBI double by Robinson to the warning track in right.
The Lafayette lead did not hold for long though as the Spartans plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs and a runner on first, UNCG recorded three straight hits, including doubles by Caleb Webster and Tripp Shelton to go ahead 3-2.
UNCG extended its lead in the second after Ben Spitznagel hit a bases-loaded triple and came in to score on a throwing error on the play. The Spartans reloaded the bases in the inning and Shelton shot an RBI single through to left side to give UNGC a 9-2 lead. It did not stop there though as the Spartans tacked on seven more runs to gain a 16-2 advantage.
After another two runs were added by the Spartans in the third, the Leopards came up to hit in the fourth and loaded the bases with one out. It started with a Woinski single to right and Kloehn followed with a double before Bubb was hit by a pitch. Rouse was due up next and he too was hit by a pitch, allowing Woinski to come home. Two batters later, Robinson became the third batter of the inning to be hit and a second run was scored.
The Spartans rattled off seven unanswered runs through the next two innings and led 25-4 heading into the eighth.
Lafayette once again loaded up the bases and this time, Posivak drove in a pair on a two-RBI single with no outs. Later in the inning, Isaiah Berg struck out swinging, but the ball trickled past the UNCG catcher and Mark Glover scampered home for the third Lafayette run in the eighth.
It would end there for the Leopards as they were unable to plate any more runs and the UNCG lead proved to be insurmountable.
The series will resume tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader that is slated to start at 1 p.m.
