EASTON Pa. -- Two big hits, a three-run home run from Brooke Wensel and a two-run double by Maddie Wensel, were enough to push Lafayette past St. Peter's in the Leopards' home opener on Wednesday.
The teams were scheduled for a doubleheader, but the weather did not cooperate, forcing the start to be delayed by an hour. When things finally got underway, the Leopards' offense was ready. Lafayette put two runners aboard for Brooke Wensel who mashed a home run to left center to give Lafayette the early lead.
Leopard starter Stephanie Thomas retired St. Peter's in order in the first two innings, but the Peacocks scored a pair of runs in the third. Crystal Carlucci (2-for-3) doubled in a run and the visitors added another on an error to trim the Leopards' lead to 3-2.
St. Peter's (1-9) took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning when Samantha Storms lifted a Thomas offering over the fence for a two-run home run.
Lafayette made its move in the sixth inning with the top of the order coming to the plate. Samantha Sweigart led off with a single back through the box. Jenna Orlando did her job and sacrificed her into scoring position. Carlucci retired Miranda Skurla, but then walked Brooke Wensel on five pitches. That set the stage for No. 5 hitter Brooke Wensel who delivered a bases-clearing double to right centerfield for the 5-4 lead.
In the top of the seventh, the Lafayette defense came through with a 5-4-1 double play as a runner tried to stretch to third on a sacrifice bunt. Lafayette reliever Stacy Gordon walked one batter and hit another before getting Alina Guevara to line out to Sweigart to end the game.
Gordon (2-3) collected the win, throwing 1.1 innings while allowing just one hit in relief of Thomas who threw 5.2 innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits. Carlucci (0-3) took the loss, surrendering five runs on just three hits.
Lafayette (2-10) returns to action on Saturday, hosting Lehigh in a three-game Patriot League series. First pitch each day is slated for noon at Metzgar Fields.
