BALTIMORE, Md. -- Lafayette opened the 2017 season with a 7-0 loss to Morgan State on Saturday in the opening round of the UMBC First Pitch Classic.
Morgan State broke open a one-run game with four runs on three hits in the fifth inning, sending Lafayette starter Stephanie Thomas from the game.
Leading, 4-0, the Bears tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Kate Vosper hit a two-run home run.
¬Morgan State pitcher Amy Begg (4-0) held the Leopard offense to four singles on the afternoon. She struck out eight and walked three. Thomas (0-1) allowed five runs on nine hits in four innings. Alexis Randall made her first collegiate appearance in the circle, giving up a pair of runs on two hits in two innings of relief.
Lafayette will play Coppin State on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. and will close out the weekend with a pair of games on Sunday at UMBC, playing Morgan State at 10 a.m. and UMBC at 12:15 p.m.
