Leopards' Late Rally Falls Short at FDU

March 7, 2017

Final Stats

TEANECK, N.J. – A four-run eighth inning was not enough to overcome Fairleigh Dickinson's large lead and the Lafayette baseball team ultimately fell 10-9 in an eight-inning game that was called due to darkness.

The Leopards (2-11) outhit the Knights 15-8 in the game, but FDU (1-9) capitalized on Lafayette's defensive miscues. As a team, the Leopards committed five errors on the field.

Five Lafayette hitters recorded a multi-hit game on the afternoon, including John Selsor, who had a team-best three knocks, including a pair of doubles. Luke Robinson and Spencer Rouse each tallied two hits and drove in two runs.

The Knights got on the board after plating three runs in the bottom of the first. Matt McCann singled to center and scampered over to second on a wild throw to first. The Knights tried to sacrifice him over to third and on the play, the Leopards attempted to catch McCann, who was dancing off second with the ball in play, but he got back in time and two runners were on with no outs in the first.

Both runners stole during the next at-bat and then scored on a Lafayette throwing error. One final run was tallied in the frame by the Knights on a costly fielding error by the Leopards.

An Alex Woinski walk in the second and a double to left center by Selsor put two runners on in scoring position and the bases then loaded up once Rouse drew a base on balls. The Knights recorded the second out of the inning, but on the next at-bat, Brandon Posivak hit a cue shot and the FDU pitcher's throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, allowing a run to score to trim the deficit to two, 3-1.

After a fielding error by FDU put Steven Cohen on first, Robinson stepped up to the plate and belted a no-doubter two-run homer over the fence in right field to knot the score up at 3-3. In the bottom half of the third though, the Knights would counter with a two-run homer of their own to retake the lead.

The Leopards trimmed the deficit to one in the sixth once Rouse rocked a long ball to left for his first collegiate home run. However, the lead extended to three once FDU responded with a two-run homer.

In the seventh, Woinski ripped a double down the line in left and later scored once Selsor shot a two-out double past the diving third baseman. A three-run seventh inning for FDU put the Knights up 10-5 heading into the eighth.

The Lafayette bats heated up in the eighth with four consecutive singles that led to a pair of runs and the bases were loaded once Woinski was hit by a pitch. Rouse was due up next in the order and he hit an RBI single to center before the fourth run of the inning was scored on a Patrick Nelson sacrifice fly to deep right.

The run would end there though for the Maroon and White as the final out of the inning was recorded and the umpires elected to call the game due to darkness.

Lafayette returns to the diamond this weekend to open a three-game series with Georgetown in the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The first game is slated for Friday at 5 p.m.
